“I was asked to do a live painting of a neighbourhood sign...something that matched the neighbourhood. Marpole has a great mix of older families that have grown up in this neighbourhood but also newer people that are getting their first apartment. It's a bit of an array of different things here. But it’s also nice because it’s an in between for the busy Richmond and Downtown. I wanted to write a message that would relate to more people here. Everyone comes into their career at their own pace, and we live in Vancouver, everyone’s like “I gotta do this.” It’s a nice way to remind yourself that it’s ok.
“I went to school for graphic design. I normally do more branding stuff and advertising but in 2018, I was given the opportunity to paint a mural with the Vancouver Mural Fest with my friend Ian so I took it on. From there, random other jobs popped up.
“My “You are Home” mural in New Westminster is an interactive, augmented reality mural [that is] one of my favourites to date. It’s meant to look like postcard signage. That mural was kind of like a welcome to all the new tourists but also everyone who is coming back to the community. It was a collab with between some students that were studying augmented reality and the City of New Westminster. There was a lot of freedom in choosing the walls and we ended up using walls that belonged to Union Gospel Mission. They’ve done a lot of great things for bringing back the community.
“A lot of people say I do a lot of work related to nostalgic things. It’s a mix of that and things that make you feel good.”
