“I’ve been making jewelry since I was really young. During COVID and lockdown, I was at home making some just for fun, but what pushed me to start my shop was my mom got diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to help my family out financially, help support my mom’s recovery, and just show her how many people were rooting for her...so, I started this business.
“I had absolutely no vision for my shop. I barely had any materials to start with, and I wasn’t expecting to make any sales at all when I first opened. When there was an outpour of support once I opened the shop, it was quite overwhelming (in the best way) but I hadn’t even figured out shipping or how exactly I was going to get packages to people. I had my boyfriend drive me around Metro Vancouver for several hours each weekend in the beginning. I think that starting a business without a plan or business model was definitely a big challenge.
“For me, it is mostly about showing my mom how many people were willing to support her. Even though I’m raising money for her, it’s really about showing her how much support she has by her side. She also helps me make a couple of pieces in her downtime and she really enjoys that. I’m glad I can help her take her mind off of things and include her in this.
“I think something that sets my business apart from others is that I don't really have one set style. I make a variety of jewelry — stuff that’s gold-plated, gold-filled, pearls, clay, beads...I just design based on what I’d wear, and make whatever I enjoy making most — that seems to have worked out well so far. That also keeps it fun for my mom and I!”
